What is the New Tesla Powerwall 3?
Released in the UK in 2024, the Tesla Powerwall 3 is a significant upgrade to the world’s most popular home battery.
The biggest change is its new integrated hybrid solar inverter. This powerful 11.04 kW inverter means that for new solar panel systems, you no longer need a separate solar inverter. The Powerwall 3 handles everything.
This simplifies your installation, reduces cost, and increases round-trip efficiency.
Powerwall 3 vs. Powerwall 2: What’s the Difference?
The primary difference is that the Powerwall 3 is the new, more powerful successor, while the Powerwall 2 is the successful legacy model that has been phased out by Tesla.
- Powerwall 3: This is the new standard for all installations. It has a 11.04 kW integrated inverter, making it perfect for new solar systems (a ‘DC-coupled’ installation). Crucially, it can also be ‘AC-coupled’ to be retrofitted to existing solar panel systems.
- Powerwall 2 (legacy): This model has been discontinued by Tesla. It was an ‘AC-coupled’ battery, meaning it was designed only for homes that already had their own solar inverter.
Powerwall 3’s flexibility to handle both new installations and retrofits, combined with its much higher power output, makes it the clear successor. A key point to note is that Powerwall 3 and Powerwall 2 systems are not compatible with each other and cannot be mixed.
FEATURE | TESLA POWERWALL 3 (NEW MODEL) | TESLA POWERWALL 2 (LEGACY MODEL) |
Best For | New Solar & Retrofits | Retrofitting (Discontinued) |
Inverter | Integrated 11.04 kW Hybrid Inverter | None (AC-Coupled) |
Power Output | 11.04 kW continuous | 5 kW continuous |
Scalability | Up to 4 units + Expansion Packs | Up to 10 units |
Coupling | DC (New Solar) or AC (Retrofit) | AC only |
Tesla Powerwall 3: Key Specifications

A Powerwall 3 for Every Need: New Configurations
The Powerwall 3 is more flexible than ever. As Premium Installers, we can design a system that perfectly matches your home’s needs and budget, using two major new innovations:
Future-Proof with Powerwall 3 Expansion Packs
Previously, if you wanted to increase your storage, you had to add an entire second Powerwall. Not anymore.
The Powerwall 3 is a modular system that supports Expansion Packs.
An Expansion Pack is a 13.5 kWh ‘add-on’ battery that connects directly to your main Powerwall 3 unit.
It doesn’t have its own inverter, which makes it a much more cost-effective way to add capacity.
You can add up to three Expansion Packs to a single Powerwall 3, allowing your system to grow from 13.5 kWh to 27 kWh, 40.5 kWh, or even 54 kWh as your family’s needs change.
The Affordable ‘Non-Backup’ Powerwall 3
For many homeowners, the primary goal is saving money on bills, and the ‘whole-home backup’ feature is a nice-to-have, but not essential. Tesla now officially supports a Non-Backup configuration for Powerwall 3.
This configuration provides all the same bill-saving benefits – storing free solar energy and charging from cheap off-peak – but at a lower upfront cost. It achieves this by replacing the expensive Backup Gateway with a simpler Tesla Remote Meter.
Crucially, this system will not provide power during an outage. However, it makes the Powerwall 3 more accessible and can be upgraded to full backup functionality later if you change your mind.
YOUR PRIMARY GOAL | WE RECOMMEND | KEY COMPONENT |
Lowest Cost | Powerwall 3 (Non-Backup) | Tesla Remote Meter |
Bill Savings + Full Backup | Powerwall 3 (Backup) | Backup Gateway |
Future-Proof Scalability | Powerwall 3 + Expansion Pack(s) | Add-on Batteries |
How Much Does a Tesla Powerwall 3 Cost in Hampshire (2025)?
As Premium installers, we provide a fully-transparent, itemised quote. While the final price depends on your home’s wiring and the configuration you choose, here is an indicative breakdown.
A key factor in affordability is the 0% VAT on battery storage, a government incentive that saves you thousands.
- Tesla Powerwall 3 with Back-Up Capability: A typical installation, including hardware and labour, costs about £7,500.
- Tesla Powerwall 3 (non Back-Up): This comes out more cost-effective at around £6,850.
- Powerwall 3 expansion pack: A 13.5 kWh Expansion Pack is roughly £5,100, fully installed.
Breaking news! From 1 December 2025 until 31 March 2026, Tesla Energy is offering up to £750 off your Powerwall installation. You can find full details in our Tesla Powerwall Rebate guide.

Ways to Save: Grants, Tariffs, and ROI
The Powerwall is a flexible asset that helps you save money and get more out of your solar panel system:
- Smart Export Guarantee (SEG): If you have solar, you can sell any excess electricity you export back to the grid, but the main idea is to capture as much of your surplus solar as possible in the battery.
- Smart tariffs: Powerwall 3 is designed to work perfectly with smart tariffs like Octopus Intelligent. The system will automatically charge the battery when electricity is cheapest (e.g. overnight) and power your home when rates are high, dramatically cutting your bills.
- ROI: Between solar self-consumption and smart tariff optimisation, most Hampshire homeowners see a significant reduction in their energy bills with battery storage, often by up to 90%.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
No. While Powerwall 3 is a perfect partner for solar, it can be installed on its own. You can use it to charge from the grid on cheap off-peak tariffs and use that stored energy when grid prices are high, saving you significant money.
No. Powerwall 3 batteries are not compatible with Powerwall 2 systems. They can only be added to other Powerwall 3 batteries or Expansion Packs.
Yes. The Powerwall 3 is IP67 rated, meaning it is flood and dust resistant. It is designed to be safely installed in a suitable location either indoors or outdoors.
A typical, straightforward Powerwall installation is completed by our expert team in a single day.
The Backup Gateway is the ‘brain’ of a backup-enabled system. It controls the Powerwall and constantly monitors the grid. If it detects a power cut, it safely disconnects your home from the grid and switches your home to backup power from the battery. It’s not required for the new ‘Non-Backup’ configuration, which uses a Tesla Remote Meter instead.
Don’t settle for a standard ‘certified’ installer for your home.
As Hampshire’s Premium Tesla Powerwall 3 experts, Infinity Energy Services delivers a superior installation based on unparalleled technical knowledge.
Whether you need full whole-home backup , a future-proof system with Expansion Packs , or the new, affordable Non-Backup solution, our local team is ready to design the perfect system for you.
