Infinity Energy Services designs and installs air source heat pumps in Aldershot. Our headquarters is at Swanwick, about 34 miles south-west of the town as the crow flies. We’re MCS-certified, we apply for your Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant – £7,500 for most Aldershot homes – and it’s deducted from your invoice.
Aldershot’s civilian town grew up alongside the army camp in the second half of the 19th century, so its homes range from Victorian terraces near the town centre to new houses at Wellesley, built on former military land. More than three in four homes in Rushmoor, the borough that includes Aldershot, are heated by mains gas alone. This page covers which Aldershot homes suit a heat pump, what Rushmoor’s planning rules mean for you and how the grant works here.

For the full detail on the grant, running costs and the two heat pump ranges we generally fit, see our main guide to heat pump installers in Hampshire.

Aldershot Homes and Heat Pumps
Most Aldershot homes can take an air source heat pump. The age of the house and the space around it usually decide how the system is designed.
The 2021 Census publishes figures for Rushmoor, the borough that covers both Aldershot and Farnborough. Rushmoor has 39,303 households: 32.1% live in semi-detached houses, 23.5% in terraced houses, 23.2% in purpose-built flats and 16.5% in detached houses.
Victorian terraces near the town centre
Much of the housing around the town centre, including the Aldershot West conservation area, is Victorian terraces. These houses often have solid brick walls, which lose more heat than modern cavity walls, so a few radiators may need upsizing; the heat loss calculation shows exactly which. Where the garden is small, we spend time at the survey finding a spot for the outdoor unit that meets the noise rules and doesn’t block the way through.
Newer homes at Wellesley
Wellesley, north of the town centre, is a new neighbourhood of up to 3,850 homes on former military land. Newer homes keep their heat well, which suits a heat pump. Before we design anything, check whether your deeds include covenants, or a management company, that control changes to the outside of the house; part of Wellesley also has an Article 4 direction (see the survey section below). A home the developer is still building can’t get the grant.
Flats with electric heating
About one in nine Rushmoor homes is heated by electricity alone, often with storage heaters in flats. A heat pump uses far less electricity than storage heaters to produce the same heat, but a flat brings its own hurdles: you’ll normally need the freeholder’s consent, somewhere outside for the unit and room for a hot water cylinder.
How Aldershot homes are heated
Across Rushmoor, 77.2% of homes rely on mains gas alone and just 0.6% on oil or LPG, so almost every Aldershot home qualifies for the standard £7,500 grant.

What We Check at an Aldershot Survey
Every survey starts with a room-by-room heat loss calculation. In Aldershot, the town’s planning history also shapes the design.
Planning: Rushmoor Borough Council
Rushmoor Borough Council decides planning matters for Aldershot and Farnborough. On a house, most air source heat pumps count as permitted development, so there’s no application to make. The rule that kept units at least 1 metre from the boundary was dropped in May 2025, which gives more options on terraced plots (more on the 2025 planning changes). Your unit still has to meet the MCS 020(a) noise standard, and we work that out at the survey.
Please note: a listed building always needs listed building consent. Aldershot also has several conservation areas – Aldershot Military, Aldershot West, Cargate, Manor Park and the Basingstoke Canal – where the rules on changes to the outside of a home are tighter. We check the rules for your address before we design anything.
Article 4 directions in Cargate and Wellesley
Two parts of Aldershot have Article 4 directions, which remove some permitted development rights. In the Cargate conservation area, changes that can be seen from the street – new windows, doors, flues and front walls, for example – need planning permission. In part of Wellesley, the direction covers windows, garage conversions and front walls and fences. Neither names heat pumps, so we check where the unit and pipework would go and, if in doubt, ask the council first.
The local grid
Aldershot’s electricity network is run by SSEN. Every heat pump has to be notified to the network operator, and some need approval before they can be connected; we deal with that paperwork for you.
The Grant and Running Costs in Aldershot
Most Aldershot homes qualify for £7,500 off an air source heat pump through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, and we take it straight off what you pay.
The scheme is for homes replacing fossil fuel heating, and GOV.UK counts electric heating alongside gas, oil and LPG, so homes with storage heaters can apply too (check who’s eligible). There’s no means test, and as an MCS-certified installer we make the application. The few Aldershot homes heated by oil or LPG with no mains gas connection can get £9,000 until March 2027 (GOV.UK). On top of the grant, heat pumps are zero-rated for VAT until 31 March 2027, according to HMRC. Our Boiler Upgrade Scheme guide sets out every grant level and how the application works.
For the three in four Rushmoor homes on mains gas, running costs come down to how carefully the system is designed and which electricity tariff you’re on. A heat pump tariff makes a real difference, and solar panels help further if your roof suits them. If you’re replacing storage heaters, the saving is usually larger, because a heat pump produces several units of heat for each unit of electricity it uses. Try your own figures in the calculator below, or read our full guide to the grant and running costs.

A Recent Hampshire Heat Pump Installation
For a family in Southampton, we installed a Samsung air source heat pump together with solar panels. Their energy bills fell from £1,710.61 a year to £517.51.
That result comes from the heat pump and the solar panels working together, and energy prices have changed since, so treat it as a real Hampshire example rather than a prediction for your home.

Frequently Asked Questions About Heat Pumps in Aldershot
For nearly every Aldershot home it’s £7,500 from the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, because only 0.6% of homes in Rushmoor are heated by oil or LPG. Those that are, and have no mains gas connection, can get £9,000 until March 2027. We apply on your behalf and the grant comes off your invoice.
It depends. GOV.UK says most new builds aren’t eligible, and a home the developer is still building can’t get the grant. If you’ve moved into a finished home that has a gas boiler, you may qualify. Tell us when your home was built and how it’s heated, and we’ll check before you commit to anything.
Not usually for a house: most air source heat pumps are permitted development if the unit meets the MCS 020(a) noise standard and the size limits. Listed buildings need consent, and conservation areas such as Cargate and Aldershot West can add restrictions, as can the Article 4 directions at Cargate and Wellesley. Rushmoor Borough Council is the planning authority, and we check your address first.
It can, and the grant covers homes with electric heating as well as gas. In a flat you’ll normally need the freeholder’s consent, a place outside for the unit and space indoors for a hot water cylinder. A survey shows whether it works for your building.
Yes – every part of Aldershot’s GU11 and GU12 postcodes, including North Town, Aldershot Park, Manor Park and Wellesley, plus Farnborough, Fleet and Church Crookham. Our headquarters is at Swanwick, about 34 miles south-west of the town.
