Air Source Heat Pump Installers in Andover

Infinity Energy Services designs and installs air source heat pumps in Andover and the surrounding Test Valley villages from our headquarters at Swanwick, about 24 miles away. We’re MCS-certified and apply for your Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant for you: £7,500 for a home on mains gas, or £9,000 if you heat with oil or LPG and have no gas connection. Either way, it’s taken off your invoice.

In central Andover, just 1.7% of households heat with oil or LPG. A few miles out, the picture changes: in the Census area covering Over Wallop and Shipton Bellinger, more than half do. This page covers both – houses in the town and its newer estates, and village homes off the gas grid – and what Test Valley’s planning rules mean for you.

Andover Homes and Heat Pumps

Most homes in and around Andover are houses with some outside space, which suits an air source heat pump. The bigger local question is what you heat with now.

The 2021 Census reports on Test Valley, the borough that includes Andover, rather than the town on its own. Of its 54,708 households, 37.6% live in detached houses, 26.9% in semi-detached houses and 21.7% in terraces; only 11.0% live in purpose-built flats.

Houses in the town

Detached and semi-detached houses usually have room for the outdoor unit at the side or back, and a cupboard or loft space for a hot water cylinder. On a terrace, space is tighter, so we look carefully at where the unit can sit to meet the noise limits.

Village homes on oil or LPG

Many homes outside the town have never had mains gas. Around Chilbolton, the Clatfords and Barton Stacey, 46.1% of households heat with oil or LPG; in the area covering Over Wallop and Shipton Bellinger, it’s 53.1%. If your house is older or has solid walls, the room-by-room survey matters even more: we check insulation and radiator sizes before sizing the heat pump, rather than matching the output of your old boiler.

Newer homes at East Anton and Picket Twenty

Andover has grown with large new neighbourhoods such as East Anton and Picket Twenty. A recently built, well-insulated house is a good match for a heat pump. If yours has a combi boiler and no hot water cylinder, we’ll find a suitable space for one as part of the design.

How Andover homes are heated

Across Test Valley, 65.1% of homes rely on mains gas alone. Another 13.9% use only oil or LPG – far more in the villages than in the town – and could qualify for the £9,000 grant.

What We Check at an Andover Survey

We start every survey by working out the heat loss of each room. Around Andover, planning, your current fuel and the local grid shape the rest of the design.

Planning: Test Valley Borough Council

Test Valley Borough Council handles planning for Andover and the villages around it. An air source heat pump on a house is normally permitted development, so most homeowners don’t need to apply. The rule that kept units at least 1 metre from the boundary was dropped in May 2025, which gives more choice on a narrow plot (more on the 2025 planning changes). Every unit still has to meet the MCS 020(a) noise standard; we work that out during the survey.

Please note: a listed building needs listed building consent, and Test Valley has 36 conservation areas, which can restrict where the unit goes. In Andover, the conservation area takes in the High Street and its approaches – London Street, Bridge Street and Marlborough Street – and the streets around St Mary’s Church. Nearby, Abbotts Ann, Amport and Monxton, Appleshaw, Thruxton, Upper Clatford and Wherwell have their own. We check what applies to your address before designing anything.

Switching from oil or LPG

If you’re replacing an oil or LPG boiler, the old tank or gas cylinders need to be dealt with too, and the space they free up is often worth considering for the outdoor unit. We also check whether you qualify for £9,000 before you commit.

The local grid

Andover is on the network run by SSEN (Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks). Every heat pump has to be notified to the network operator, and some need approval before they can be connected. We deal with that for you.

The Grant and Running Costs in Andover

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme takes £7,500 off the cost of an air source heat pump – or £9,000 for many homes in the villages around Andover.

The higher amount applies until March 2027 if your home is heated by oil or LPG and has no mains gas connection; other homes can get £7,500 (GOV.UK). There’s no means test. We make the application as your MCS-certified installer, so the grant is deducted from your bill rather than paid to you later. Heat pump installations are also zero-rated for VAT until 31 March 2027 (HMRC). Our guide to the Boiler Upgrade Scheme explains who qualifies and how to apply.

In the villages, oil and LPG generally cost more per unit of heat than mains gas, so switching from them usually brings the bigger saving. In the town, where most homes are on gas, the result depends more on good system design and an electricity tariff built for heat pumps. Put your own figures into the calculator below, or see our full guide to the grant and running costs.

A Recent Hampshire Heat Pump Installation

We fitted a Samsung air source heat pump and solar panels to a family home in Southampton. Their energy bills went from £1,710.61 a year to £517.51.

Bear in mind that the saving comes from the two systems working together, and energy prices have moved since then.

Frequently Asked Questions About Heat Pumps in Andover

It depends on how your home is heated. Homes on mains gas – most of the town – get £7,500 from the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. If you heat with oil or LPG and have no mains gas connection, as many village homes around Andover do, it’s £9,000 until March 2027. We apply for it and take it off your invoice.

Usually, yes. Oil and LPG tend to cost more per unit of heat than mains gas, so the savings from switching are generally bigger, and you may qualify for the £9,000 grant. Larger and older village houses need careful design, which is why every quote starts with a room-by-room heat loss survey.

Not usually for a house. Most air source heat pumps are permitted development, as long as the unit meets the MCS 020(a) noise standard and the size limits. Listed buildings need consent, and Test Valley’s conservation areas – including Andover town centre and villages such as Wherwell and Amport – can limit where the unit goes. Test Valley Borough Council is the planning authority, and we check your address before designing anything.

We service the air source heat pumps we install in Andover and the surrounding villages, so we can look after your system once it’s in. We don’t carry out repairs or service heat pumps fitted by other installers. A regular service helps the system keep running efficiently.

Yes – the whole town, including East Anton, Augusta Park and Picket Twenty, and villages such as Abbotts Ann, Appleshaw, Thruxton, Upper Clatford, Wherwell, Stockbridge and the Wallops. We’re based at Swanwick, about 24 miles south of Andover.
