How do solar panels work?
Solar panels are a magical product. Point a solar panel at the sun and it will immediately start generating electricity.
And how much does that electricity cost? Nothing! The sun is a free energy source which your solar panels take advantage of to fill your home with carbon-free, zero-cost electricity.
Solar panels generate a kind of electricity called Direct Current or DC. In the home, we all need a different kind of electricity called Alternating Current or AC.
What’s the solution to the AC-DC issue? We connect your solar panels to an ‘inverter’ which transforms DC electricity from the panels into AC electricity you can use in the home. Job done.

SOLAR PANELS MAKES AND MODELS
Searching for the ideal solution
We can install any solar panel brand and model available in the UK market. However, there are certain panels we favour at any given time. We are always looking for panels which hit the sweet-spot of:
- High efficiency
- Long warranties
- Tier 1 manufacturer
- Reasonable cost
We are in constant contact with our suppliers to hunt down solar panels that meet all four of the criteria above. Panels we recommend at the moment for an optimal solar panel installation include SunPower, Jinko Solar, Aiko, JA Solar, Q Cells, and Longi Solar. See the comparison table below:
MAKE | PANEL RATING | PRODUCT WARRANTY | PERFORMANCE WARRANTY | CATEGORY |
Aiko | 455W | 25 years | 30 years | Tier 1 |
Q Cells | 400W | 12 years | 25 years | Tier 1 |
Longi Solar | 410W | 12 years | 25 years | Tier 1 |
JA Solar | 430W | 25 years | 30 years | Tier 1 |
Jinko Solar | 440W | 25 years | 30 years | Tier 1 |
SunPower DC | 450W | 30 years | 30 years | Tier 1 |
SunPower AC | 445W | 40 years | 40 years | Tier 1 |
Tier 1 solar panels are produced by high-quality manufacturers with financial stability, significant investment in R&D, and automated production processes. Tier 1 panels are considered ‘bankable’ by financial institutions and come with strong warranties.

SOLAR INVERTERS MAKES AND MODELS
What’s the best inverter to connect your panels up to? It depends on your situation. To determine what’s appropriate for you, we ask the following two questions:
- Does your roof suffer from shading?
- Do you want advanced monitoring – to be able to see how each panel is performing in detail?
If your answer to either of these questions is ‘yes’, we recommend SolarEdge inverter technology.
If your answer to both questions is ‘no’, then we recommend a standard inverter which works out cheaper.
RECOMMENDED SOLUTION | STANDARD INVERTER | SOLAREDGE INVERTER & OPTIMISERS |
Do you have shading? | No | Yes |
Would you like advanced monitoring? | No | Yes |
Here are the inverter makes we install on a regular basis – ones we know well and trust:
MAKE | WARRANTY | SHADE MITIGATION? | STANDARD MONITORING | ADVANCED MONITORING |
Solis | 5-20 years | Basic | Yes | No |
SolaX | 10-15 years | Basic | Yes | No |
SolarEdge | 12-25 years | Yes - advanced | Yes | Yes |
Whereas solar panels are very robust and rarely fail, the inverter does all the electrical heavy-lifting and will probably stop working at some point. So it’s worth thinking carefully about how long your inverter warranty is valid for. We always recommend a minimum of 10 years.
