Solar Panels and Batteries for Winchester Homes
Can you put solar panels on an older home in Winchester? Often you can – and where a listed building, a conservation area or the South Downs National Park means extra checks, we look into them before we design your system. At Infinity Energy Services we’ve been designing and installing solar panels and battery storage since 2011, for homes and businesses across the city and the wider district; we’re MCS-certified, and every project starts with a free survey and a fixed, no-obligation quote.

How Much Do Solar Panels Cost in Winchester?

Every roof and household is different, so the price depends on the size of the system, your roof, the panels and inverter you choose, and whether you add a battery.
As a guide, a typical 4 kW solar PV system – suitable for most three- or four-bedroom homes – costs from £4,000 fully installed. Adding a 5 kWh battery adds about £3,000.
- 0% VAT: solar panels and batteries installed in homes currently carry 0% VAT instead of 20%, a relief that runs until 31 March 2027.
- Smart Export Guarantee (SEG): once your system is registered, your energy supplier pays you for the electricity you export. Every large supplier has to offer a SEG tariff, but rates vary widely, so it pays to compare.
- Finance: you can spread the cost with monthly payments, subject to status.

Winchester Homes and Solar Panels
Winchester is a district of houses more than flats. At the 2021 Census, 36.2% of households across the Winchester district – the city and the villages around it – lived in a detached house, 25.8% in a semi-detached house and 20.1% in a terraced house, while about one in six lived in a flat (ONS, accommodation type). That shapes what each home can take:
- Detached houses often have more roof to work with, so there may be room for a bigger system or for panels on more than one roof slope – useful if you want to add a battery or run an electric car.
- Semi-detached and terraced houses often have room for a 4 kW system on the main roof. East- or west-facing roofs work well too – they spread generation across the morning and afternoon.
- Shading from mature trees, chimneys or neighbouring buildings can affect some roofs. Optimisers or microinverters from SolarEdge or Enphase limit the losses from shaded panels, and we check shading at the survey.
- Flats: panels on a shared roof need the agreement of the freeholder or management company. If you own a flat, tell us at the start and we’ll say what’s realistic for your building.
- Listed and period homes: see planning below.
Planning Permission and Grid Connection in Winchester
Planning permission
Most houses don’t need planning permission for solar panels on the roof. They count as permitted development, provided the panels don’t stick out more than 20 cm from the roof slope or rise above the highest part of the roof (excluding the chimney).
Listed buildings need listed building consent, and homes in conservation areas have extra limits, so if either applies we’ll check with Winchester City Council before we design your system. Parts of the district lie inside the South Downs National Park, where the National Park Authority is the planning authority and Winchester City Council handles most applications on its behalf.
Our guide to planning permission for solar panels covers the rules in more detail.
Connecting to the grid
Winchester’s local electricity network is run by SSEN. Systems up to 3.68 kW per phase are connected under the G98 process, where we notify SSEN after installation (SSEN). Larger systems, including many solar and battery combinations, need G99 approval from SSEN before we install.
We handle the paperwork either way, and give you the MCS certificate you need to apply for a Smart Export Guarantee tariff.
From First Call to Switch-On
Here’s how a solar installation works with us:
- Initial phone consultation: we find out about your home, how you use electricity and what you want from solar.
- Desktop design: our design team looks at your roof using aerial imagery and suggests options.
- Tailored proposal: a clear, itemised proposal for your system, with or without a battery.
- Project briefing: we talk you through the proposal, explain the design and answer your questions.
- On-site technical survey: one of our surveyors checks your roof, your electrics and the best place for the inverter and battery.
- Installation: on the agreed dates, we install your system – usually in 1-2 days for a typical home – then commission it and show you how it works.

Electric car charging point
Are you thinking of buying or already own an electric car? We can install both your EV charging point and solar panels, allowing you to charge your vehicle with free, 100% clean, renewable energy!
We work with all the major EV charger manufacturers, including Myenergi Zappi, EO, Ohme, Indra, Wallbox, Zaptec, Hive, Pod Point, Easee and Hypervolt.

Free hot water with an immersion controller
Use the energy you generate from your solar panels to heat the water in your tank and get free hot water.
By adding a Solar iBoost or Myenergi Eddi immersion controller to your existing solar PV system, you can benefit from free hot water by diverting surplus solar power.
Air source heat pumps (ASHP)
Air source heat pump systems are very effective methods of heating your home and water in an environmentally friendly way. Reduce your reliance on gas, oil or LPG by switching to a low-carbon heating system.
Air source heat pumps are now a mature technology and all the major heating manufacturers have a full range of pumps to suit a variety of situations.

Solar Panels in Winchester: Your Questions Answered
As a guide, a typical 4 kW system costs from £4,000 fully installed, and adding a 5 kWh battery adds about £3,000. Homes pay 0% VAT on both until 31 March 2027. Your free survey gives you an exact, fixed price.
Usually not for panels on the roof of a house – they are permitted development. Listed buildings need consent, and conservation areas have extra limits, so we check with Winchester City Council – or the South Downs National Park Authority if your home is in the national park – where needed.
Sometimes. Panels on a shared roof need the agreement of the freeholder or management company. Tell us at the start and we will tell you what is realistic for your building.
Most of our customers think so – more than 95% of our solar customers now add one. A battery lets you use your daytime solar in the evening and can charge overnight on a cheaper time-of-use tariff. Your proposal shows the figures for your home with and without one.
Yes. Panels generate electricity from daylight, not just direct sunshine, so they still produce power on cloudy days – just less than in bright sun.
A typical home installation takes 1-2 days. We agree the dates with you once your survey and design are complete.
We notify SSEN, the local network operator, or apply for approval if your system needs it. To be paid for the electricity you export, you apply to an energy supplier for a Smart Export Guarantee tariff, using the MCS certificate we give you.
