The MCS Foundation has expressed its enthusiasm for the recent allocation of an extra £1.5 billion towards the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS), aimed at assisting families in transitioning from traditional fossil fuel boilers to more sustainable heat pumps.

“The welcomed infusion of funds comes as a direct result of our efforts to secure increased government backing for the shift towards heat pumps,” said Dr. Richard Hauxwell-Baldwin, who oversees research and campaigns at The MCS Foundation.

According to Dr. Hauxwell-Baldwin, heat pumps stand as the sole practical solution for large-scale decarbonization of residential heating, noting an unprecedented rise in their adoption across households.

The newly earmarked £1.5 billion is set to support the installation of an additional 200,000 heat pumps over the next four years.

This comes at a time when the government has set an ambitious goal of fitting 600,000 heat pumps annually by the year 2028.

Despite the optimism surrounding this funding, Dr. Hauxwell-Baldwin emphasized the necessity for further financial aid for homeowners alongside widespread promotion of the available grants. He highlighted that achieving the installation targets and transitioning homes away from gas heating at the required rate demands more concerted efforts and resources.
