The Maritime and Coastguard Agency in Dover, Kent, was keen to explore how it could reduce future electricity bills through Solar PV. Following consultation with Infinity Energy Services the right system was agreed, and the company’s full design and installation service met their requirements precisely.
The solution also answered a key early design consideration, which was to decide whether to site the array on the ground or on one or more of the Agency’s roof spaces.
THE SYSTEM – A BRIEF OVERVIEW
Following our site visit and detailed survey, Infinity Energy Services recommended installing a Solar Panel system using 320W poly-crystalline panels and a 50 kW inverter.
The roof-mounted PV array would provide excellent savings on annual electricity costs, and a project payback period of only 8.5 years. With long-term guaranteed performance, the system’s will have generated a profit of close to £200,000 over 20 years.
The solution and its advantages
A roof-mounted PV array had a number of advantages, not least of which was the reduction of cost for the system. It also minimised risk of downtime and disruption (unexpected underground obstructions) and removed the need for ground reconstruction, such as re-tarmacking.
Longer term, it reduces the need for extra maintenance, and because a roof mounted system uses shorter cable runs this would also improve array efficiency.

HOW THE PROJECT CAME TOGETHER AND WHAT IT DELIVERED
Designed using PV*SOL software, an accurate, predicted estimated of 47,012 kWh of solar electricity will be generated each year
Roof mounted solar PV system comprising 320W Jinko Maxim solar panels and a 50 kW GinlongSOL Inverter
Mono-crystalline solar panels are individually optimised to increase power output, minimising the effect of shade on some panel locations
East and west facing panels with a low tilt of 10 degrees generates electricity evenly throughout the day, matching demand calculations for HM Coastguard Dover's specific location
Through Solar PV, we were able to achieve the customer’s objectives, giving them an annual saving of over £4,500 on their previous electricity bill and a profit after 20 years of more than £182,000.
