Government Pushes Solar Car Parks to Boost Clean Energy
New Solar Opportunities for UK Businesses – Save Money and Go Green

In a move welcomed by the renewable energy sector, the UK Government has announced new plans to accelerate the rollout of solar panel installations across car parks in England. The initiative is part of a wider strategy to reduce energy costs, cut carbon emissions, and strengthen the nation’s energy independence.
Under the new proposals, commercial solar car park canopies will benefit from fast-tracked planning permission, cutting red tape and encouraging more private investment. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero estimates that these streamlined measures could unlock up to 150,000 car parks across England as viable sites for solar installations.

More Solar on Rooftops & in Car Parks
Energy Security Secretary Claire Coutinho stated:
“We’re speeding up the delivery of solar on rooftops and car parks to help households and businesses benefit from lower energy bills, while supporting the drive to net zero in a pragmatic way.”
The plans aim to address the dual challenge of increasing renewable capacity while ensuring minimal disruption to land use. Car parks – often underutilised spaces – present a prime opportunity to generate clean electricity close to where it’s needed, including at offices, supermarkets, hospitals, and transport hubs.
Infinity Energy Services Supports Businesses in the South
Infinity Energy Services’ Managing Director, Daniel Hanslip, commented:
“This is exactly the kind of policy we need. Solar carports offer a smart, visible way to combine everyday infrastructure with clean energy generation. We’re ready to help businesses across the South of England take advantage of this opportunity.”
The new measures also reinforce the Government’s ambition to deliver 70GW of solar capacity by 2035, a near fivefold increase from current levels. The announcement follows previous plans to mandate solar panels on many new homes and buildings and to expand rooftop solar across public sector properties.
Solar Energy UK
Industry bodies, including Solar Energy UK, have praised the proposals, noting that solar car parks can reduce on-site electricity costs for businesses and provide welcome shelter for vehicles.
As demand for clean energy grows and energy prices remain volatile, now is an ideal time for commercial property owners to explore both solar carport and roof-top systems. With improved planning support, solar panels can become a mainstream part of the UK’s energy landscape – delivering savings, sustainability, and a smarter use of space.
