What is the New Tesla Powerwall 3?

Released in the UK in 2024, the Tesla Powerwall 3 is a significant upgrade to the world’s most popular home battery.

The biggest change is its new integrated hybrid solar inverter. This powerful inverter – configurable from 3.68 kW up to 11.04 kW – means that for new solar panel systems, you no longer need a separate solar inverter.

The Powerwall 3 handles everything in a single unit, which simplifies your installation, reduces cost, and increases round-trip efficiency.

With 13.5 kWh of usable storage capacity, a single Powerwall 3 can comfortably meet the evening and overnight electricity needs of an average UK home.

For larger properties or higher energy users, the system scales up with Expansion Packs and multiple Powerwall units.

A notable feature for West Sussex homes with larger electricity demands is the configurable inverter output. Your installer can set the power output anywhere between 3.68 kW and 11.04 kW, matching the system precisely to your property’s electrical setup and your District Network Operator’s (DNO) requirements.

DC-Coupled vs. AC-Coupled Installation

Powerwall 3 is uniquely flexible. If you are having new solar panels installed in West Sussex alongside your battery, the Powerwall acts as both your solar inverter and your battery – a ‘DC-coupled’ installation that saves you the cost of a separate inverter.

If you already have solar panels with their own inverter, the Powerwall 3 can also be retrofitted as an ‘AC-coupled’ system using a Tesla Remote Meter, working seamlessly alongside your existing setup.

And if you don’t have solar panels at all, the Powerwall 3 can still be installed on its own to charge from cheap off-peak grid electricity and power your home when rates are higher.

A Powerwall 3 for Every Need: Configurations Explained

The Powerwall 3 is more flexible than ever. As Premium Installers, we can design a system that perfectly matches your home’s needs and budget, using two major innovations:

Future-Proof with Powerwall 3 Expansion Packs

Technical diagram showing a Tesla Powerwall 3 unit in blue with two modular Expansion Packs connected via harness cables

Previously, if you wanted more storage, you had to add an entire second Powerwall. Not anymore.

The Powerwall 3 now supports modular Expansion Packs. Each Expansion Pack adds 13.5 kWh of storage and connects directly to your main Powerwall 3 unit via a simple harness. Because it doesn’t have its own inverter, an Expansion Pack is a much more cost-effective way to add capacity.

You can add up to three Expansion Packs to a single Powerwall 3, scaling your system from 13.5 kWh to 27 kWh, 40.5 kWh, or 54 kWh as your family’s needs change. For even larger requirements, up to four Powerwall 3 units can be combined – each with its own Expansion Packs – for a maximum capacity of 94.5 kWh.

The Affordable ‘Non-Backup’ Powerwall 3

Tesla Powerwall 3 in the new Non-Backup configuration, now available from Premium Certified Installer Infinity Energy Services in West Sussex

For many West Sussex homeowners, the primary goal is saving money on energy bills. Whole-home backup is a useful feature, but not essential for all households. So Tesla now offers a Non-Backup configuration for Powerwall 3.

This configuration still provides all the main bill-saving benefits – storing excess solar energy and charging from cheaper off-peak electricity tariffs – but at a lower upfront cost. It achieves this by using a Tesla Remote Meter instead of the more expensive Backup Gateway 2.

This system will not provide power during a grid outage. However, backup functionality can usually be added later if required, although this would involve additional hardware and installation work.

As Premium Installers, we provide a fully transparent, itemised quote. While the final price depends on your home’s wiring and the configuration you choose, here is an indicative breakdown.

A key factor in affordability is the 0% VAT on residential battery storage, a government incentive valid until at least 31 March 2027 that saves you hundreds of pounds.

  • Tesla Powerwall 3 with Backup capability: A typical installation, including hardware and labour, costs around £7,500.
  • Tesla Powerwall 3 (Non-Backup): This comes in more cost-effectively at around £6,850.
  • Powerwall 3 Expansion Pack: A 13.5 kWh Expansion Pack is approximately £5,100, fully installed.

Maximising Your Return on Investment

The Powerwall is a flexible asset that helps you save money and get more out of your energy:

  • Solar self-consumption: If you have solar panels, the Powerwall captures surplus electricity during the day and uses it to power your home in the evening and overnight, rather than exporting it cheaply and buying it back at peak rates.
  • Smart tariff optimisation: Powerwall 3 works seamlessly with intelligent tariffs such as Octopus Flux. The system automatically charges the battery when electricity is cheapest (often overnight at 7-8p/kWh) and powers your home when rates are highest – dramatically cutting your bills.
  • Smart Export Guarantee (SEG): If you generate more solar electricity than you can use or store, you can sell the surplus back to the grid and earn a small income.

Between solar self-consumption and smart tariff shifting, many of our customers see their electricity bills drop by 70-90%.

STEP 1: Free Expert Survey

It starts with a conversation. Our team will conduct a free, no-obligation remote or on-site survey to understand your energy goals and assess your home’s electrical setup. We’ll discuss whether you want the Backup or Non-Backup configuration, whether Expansion Packs make sense for your usage, and how the Powerwall fits with your existing (or planned) solar system.

STEP 2: System Design & Proposal

We don’t do ‘one-size-fits-all’. Our designers specify the optimal Powerwall configuration, inverter output setting, and solar integration for your property. You’ll receive a clear, itemised proposal with no hidden costs. We also handle the DNO notification – most Powerwall 3 installations in West Sussex fall under the G99 application process, which we manage on your behalf.

STEP 3: Installation Day

Our certified installers will complete your installation, typically in a single day. We handle all wiring, mounting, and commissioning with meticulous care and professionalism. The Powerwall can be mounted on a wall or on the floor, indoors or outdoors. We’ll advise on the best location for your home.

STEP 4: Handover & Commissioning

We commission the system and connect it to your Wi-Fi network. We won’t leave until we’ve shown you how to use the Tesla App to monitor your energy production and consumption in real time, set your preferences, and watch your savings grow.

Tesla Powerwall 3 Warranty and Maintenance

The Tesla Powerwall 3 comes with a comprehensive 10-year warranty, provided the unit remains connected to the internet for remote firmware updates. For UK installations, the warranty guarantees 80% energy retention at 10 years with unlimited charge/discharge cycles for standard applications (solar self-consumption, time-based control, and backup).

If a warranted fault occurs, Tesla will repair or replace the unit. The warranty covers the Powerwall 3, Expansion Packs, and the Backup Gateway 2.

Maintenance is minimal. According to Tesla’s Owner’s Manual, Powerwall 3 requires no scheduled preventative maintenance. The only requirement is to keep the area around the unit clear of debris, particularly around the air intake and exhaust vents.

Infinity Energy Services also provides a 2-year free call-out guarantee on all Powerwall installations, in addition to Tesla’s standard warranty. This gives you an extra layer of reassurance during those critical first years.

Tesla as a UK Energy Supplier – What This Means for Powerwall Owners

In March 2026, energy regulator Ofgem granted Tesla Energy Ventures a retail electricity supply licence for Great Britain. This is a landmark development that transforms the Powerwall from a standalone battery into a gateway to a fully integrated Tesla energy ecosystem.

Tesla is widely expected to launch a service similar to ‘Tesla Electric’, the retail energy offering it introduced in Texas in 2022. In Texas, Tesla Electric allows customers to buy electricity at competitive rates, charge their EVs cheaply, and sell surplus solar energy back to the grid, all managed through the Tesla App.

For West Sussex homeowners with a Powerwall, this could mean:

  • Bundled energy tariffs designed specifically to maximise the value of your battery and solar system.
  • Virtual Power Plant participation – connecting your Powerwall to a network of batteries that provide grid services, with Tesla paying you for the energy your battery contributes. Tesla has already paid Powerwall owners over $10 million through its virtual power plant programmes globally.
  • A complete energy ecosystem where your solar panels, Powerwall, EV charger, and energy supply are all managed through a single app.

Full details of Tesla’s UK tariff plans have not yet been announced, but the direction of travel is clear: investing in a Powerwall today means you are buying into a growing ecosystem, not just a battery. We will update this section as more details emerge.

Tesla Powerwall April 2026 Update

Energy Prices

The Ofgem energy price cap fell by 6.7% on 1 April 2026, bringing the typical annual dual-fuel bill down from £1,758 to £1,641. The average electricity unit rate under the cap dropped to 24.7p/kWh. This is welcome news, but electricity prices remain 35% above their pre-energy-crisis levels, which means battery storage continues to offer substantial savings, particularly when paired with a smart tariff that charges overnight at 7-8p/kWh.

Tesla Energy Ventures

As noted above, Tesla received its Ofgem electricity supply licence on 11 March 2026. The company has not yet announced a UK launch date or tariff details for Tesla Electric, but industry analysts expect more information in the coming months. We will report any developments here.

0% VAT on Battery Storage

The 0% VAT rate on residential battery storage installations remains in effect and is confirmed until at least 31 March 2027. This applies to both new installations and retrofits, including standalone batteries installed without solar panels.

Spring Solar Generation

April marks the beginning of the strongest solar generation period in West Sussex. Daylight hours increase significantly, and with the longer, sunnier days ahead, homeowners with solar panels and a Powerwall can expect to generate and store substantially more free electricity over the spring and summer months.

Powerwall for Businesses in West Sussex

The Tesla Powerwall 3 isn’t just for homes. It’s a powerful tool for businesses in West Sussex, too.

The system is highly scalable. Up to four Powerwall 3 units can be installed together, along with additional Expansion Packs, allowing a maximum combined capacity of 94.5 kWh and up to 44 kW of continuous power. This makes the system suitable for larger homes as well as offices, retail units, workshops, and light industrial premises.

A commercial Powerwall system can help businesses reduce high peak-demand electricity charges, maximise self-consumption from on-site solar, and keep critical systems running during a power cut.

Please note that commercial installations are subject to standard 20% VAT (VAT-registered businesses can reclaim this). The 0% VAT rate applies only to residential installations.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

A Tesla Powerwall 3 with backup capability typically costs around £7,500 fully installed in West Sussex, including hardware and labour. The Non-Backup configuration is around £6,850. Additional Expansion Packs cost approximately £5,100 each. All residential installations benefit from 0% VAT (valid until at least 31 March 2027). Contact us for a personalised quote for your West Sussex property.

No. While Powerwall 3 is a perfect partner for solar panels, it can be installed on its own. Without solar, you can charge the battery from the grid on cheap off-peak tariffs (often overnight at 7-8p/kWh) and use that stored electricity during the day when rates are higher – saving you significant money.

Only if you want your home to keep running during a power cut. The Backup Gateway 2 monitors the grid and automatically switches your home to battery power if it detects an outage. If you don’t need backup power, the more affordable Non-Backup configuration uses a Tesla Remote Meter instead and still delivers full bill-saving benefits.

Tesla provides a 10-year warranty that guarantees the battery will retain at least 80% of its original 13.5 kWh capacity, with unlimited charge/discharge cycles for standard applications. The full 10-year term requires the Powerwall to remain connected to the internet. In addition, Infinity Energy Services provides a 2-year free call-out guarantee on all installations.

A typical Powerwall installation in West Sussex is completed by our team in a single day. However, most installations require a DNO (Distribution Network Operator) application under G99, which can take several weeks to process before the installation date. We handle the entire application process on your behalf.

Yes. Residential battery storage installations, including standalone batteries without solar panels, qualify for 0% VAT until at least 31 March 2027. This applies to all residential Powerwall installations in West Sussex. Commercial installations are subject to standard 20% VAT.

Yes. You can add up to three Expansion Packs to a single Powerwall 3, increasing your storage from 13.5 kWh to a maximum of 54 kWh. Each Expansion Pack connects via a simple harness and weighs 110 kg. They can be floor-mounted (stacked behind the Powerwall) or wall-mounted alongside it.

Almost certainly, yes. We cover all of West Sussex, including Chichester, Worthing, Crawley, Horsham, Bognor Regis, Littlehampton, Burgess Hill, Haywards Heath, East Grinstead, Shoreham-by-Sea, Lancing, Steyning, Midhurst, Petworth, Billingshurst, Selsey, and all surrounding villages. Call us on 0800 909 8882 to confirm.

If you have the Backup configuration with a Backup Gateway 2, the system detects the power cut automatically and seamlessly switches your home to battery power within milliseconds. You can choose whole-home backup (the entire property is powered) or partial backup (only selected circuits). If you have the Non-Backup configuration, the Powerwall will safely disconnect during a power cut and will not provide backup power.

Yes, in several ways. If you have solar panels, you can earn from the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) by selling surplus electricity back to the grid. With a smart tariff, your Powerwall can charge cheaply and discharge at higher rates, saving you money that would otherwise go to your supplier. And with Tesla’s forthcoming UK energy supply service, there may be opportunities to participate in virtual power plant programmes that pay you for grid services.
