Can the Reserve battery provide emergency power in a power-cut?

SunPower Reserve Backup Power

Keep The Lights On

Yes, the Reserve comes with emergency power capabilities as standard.

With a switchover time of under 20 milliseconds, you might not even be aware there was a power-cut.

The Reserve back-up functionality is provided via a dedicated circuit in your fuse box, so you can be sure your essential devices retain power if the grid goes down.

Can the Reserve be combined with a solar panel system?

Solar & Storage Combined

The Reserve battery is a perfect addition to any solar panel system, providing high charging and discharging rates.

Depending on whether you have an existing solar PV system – or are getting a new one installed – there are three connection options available:

SunPower Solar and Battery Storage

AC Connection

An AC-connected Reserve battery is ideal if you have an existing solar panel system in place.

The battery is wired up separately to the solar array, but captures as much of your excess solar generation as possible.

AC Connected

DC Connection

A DC connection makes sense if you are getting solar panels installed at the same time as the battery.

The Reserve acts both as your solar inverter and battery inverter, saving you money and making the installation less complex.

DC Connected

Hybrid Connection

This configuration allows you to add both a battery and extra solar panels to your existing solar array.

The net result is you gain additional solar generation for your home, as well as all the advantages of modern battery storage.

Hybrid Connection

Is it possible to charge the SunPower Reserve with off-peak electricity?

Reserve Off-peak Charging

Benefit from Cheap Electricity

In addition to capturing excess solar electricity, the SunPower Reserve can also be charged with low-cost night-time electricity.

To take advantage of this, you need to sign up to a dual-rate electricity tariff, with a low off-peak rate and a normal day-time rate.

You can then programme the SunPower Reserve to start charging when the low rate kicks in.

Off-peak charging of your battery is especially relevant in winter when solar generation is lower. If the panels can’t fill up your battery during the day, you can top them up with off-peak grid electricity.

In summer, off-peak charging is less of an issue, as generally your panels will be able to fully charge your battery each day.

Does the SunPower Reserve have an app for monitoring?

SunPower One App

Yes, the handy SunPower One app allows you to monitor your energy usage and gain money-saving insights, all from the palm of your hand.

Download the app onto your smartphone and:

  • Monitor energy flows in and out of the house for solar, battery and grid electricity.
  • Learn how you use energy – which devices consume the most power?
  • Discover how much you are saving in terms of money, carbon and kWh.
  • Get energy-saving tips to help you modify habits and save even more.

Can the Reserve be installed outside?

Indoor and Outdoor Installation

IP65 Rating

The Reserve can either be installed inside or outside due to its IP65 rating.

Its operating temperatures range from -10°C to +50°C. Operating humidity is 0-90%.

If installed outside, the Reserve should be sheltered from snow, rain and direct sunlight.

How long is the warranty on the SunPower Reserve?

Market-Leading Warranty

SunPower offers a superb 10-year battery warranty covering Product, Power and Service:

  • Product – Both the battery and internal inverter are covered for defects for up to 10 years.
  • Power – SunPower guarantees the battery will have a minimum 80% usable capacity after 10 years.
  • Service – In addition, SunPower will pay to have any repairs or replacements carried out via their partner network.

It’s worth noting also that although the product warranty is for 10 years, you are likely to enjoy many more years of useful storage.

Is the Reserve single-phase or 3-phase?

Works with All Energy Supplies

The current version of the Reserve battery has been designed to work predominantly with a single-phase supply.

Most houses in the UK have a single-phase supply. Larger houses or commercial buildings often have a 3-phase supply.

The Reserve can nonetheless provide battery storage on a 3-phase supply as well, by connecting up to just one of the phases.

A dedicated 3-phase version of the Reserve will be launched in the UK in the coming months.

Single Phase and 3-Phase

What battery chemistry does the Reserve use?

SunPower Reserve Battery Chemistry

The Benefits of LFP

The battery chemistry inside the Reserve is Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO₄) or LFP for short.

LFP has many benefits over other types of battery chemistry, including:

  • Longer Cycle Life – Minimal performance degradation over time and greater durability.
  • Enhanced Safety – LFP cells are highly stable and much less prone to thermal runaway issues.
  • Temperature Range – The battery operates efficiently in extreme cold and high heat environments.
